There have been many projects going back to the seventies to get a marae established in Poihakena since the earliest times of Maori contact with the colony of NSW. For many reasons, none has ever been successful.

Quite simply, while concerted efforts were made by many, while many sacrifices were made; while the efforts of many wonderful people were channelled towards this goal, the time just wasn’t right. For those strongly steeped in tikanga, this was all part of a gradual learning process which had to occur. Maori in Poihakena needed an identity reflective of and inclusive of all.

Of course, Maori have been coming to Poihakena (Sydney), since the 1780’s. What began all those years ago has never ceased. Trade, work and a better life have always been what attracted our people here; the chance to start afresh in a vast and vibrant land where hard work and determination paid off. But, it is really only in recent times that Maori have begun to realise the true power...
